Church and Mission

Reaching Ordinary Folk

According to Lesslie Newbigin, the church at mission “will be a community that does not live for itself but is deeply involved in the concerns of its neighbourhood. It will be the church for the specific place where it lives, not the church for those who wish to be members of it – or, rather, it will be for them insofar as they are willing to be for the wider community.”

Sharing the Story in word and deed will mean going to where people are, rather than trying to get people to come into our holy places. They'll come later, perhaps, but first, the missional spirit takes us to their turf, to the place where ordinary, normal people eat and drink, have fun and fellowship, where they live and move and have their being.

Missionaries have always known this. Many (most?) local church types haven't figured this out yet.
