Poignant and Hopeful

The words to the hymn ‘Abide With Me' were written by Henry Francis Lyte in 1847. But the tune he wrote was difficult to sing and never seemed quite right for the words. Some years later, a gifted London organist was standing with his wife at the window of their home, gazing at the sunset. They were heartbroken for their little 3 yr. old girl had died not long before.
As her father looked at the setting sun, the words of Lyte's hymn passed through his mind. Suddenly, tears in his eyes, he turned away and sat down at his desk. He took up his pen, and 10 minutes later, a new tune lay before him.
Born in a father's broken heart, was the tune we sing today.
