God's Goodness

And Mercy

The hymnwriter Joseph Addison (1672-1719) wrote in The Spectator, London, issue 453, on August 9th, 1712. An essay had been delivered on 'gratitude' and the hymn followed.

Addison wrote: "I have already obliged the public with some pieces of divine poetry which have fallen into my hands, and as they have met with the reception they deserve, I shall, from time to time, communicate any work of the same nature which has not appeared in print, and may be acceptable to my readers."

I have loved this old hymn for many years. One can Google and find all of the stanzas, but it is the lines of the first that continue to flood into my own worship experience, time and again. There's no music accompaniment here (though I could play for you on my violin and that would bring you to tears :-)

Clicking on the movie, you will get the words of the first stanza and perhaps, wtih me, be 'lost in wonder, love and praise.'
