When God Comes Through

Category:

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—those he redeems from the hand of the enemy, those he gathers from throughout the earth - from east and west, from north and south.

They who go out on the sea in ships - who are merchants in mighty waters -They see the works of the Lord - his wonderful deeds in the deep.

For God speaks and stirs up a storm that lifts up the waves. The ships mount up to the heavens and roll down to the depths; in their peril the crew's courage melts away.

Reeling and staggering like drunkards; they come to their wits’ end.

Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble . . . and he brings them out of their distress. He stills the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea are hushed.

They are glad when it grows calm, when He guides them to their desired haven.

Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.

"Eternal Father, Strong to Save" is a hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, particularly in the maritime armed services. Written in 1860, its author William Whiting was inspired by the dangers of the sea described in Psalm 107. Whiting was an Anglich churchman of Winchester, England.
