Lift the Sail

The Wind of God

Category:

Emerson Fosdick said often that his primary task was not as a preacher...he did not see himself as a preacher but as a counsellor.  And he said, through all of his experience he discovered that men and women who were constantly giving out mental and spiritual energy have a breakdown if it's all in them - if the only answer that they've got is to try harder.

He said, that what they need to realize is that they are not power boats with all their energy in a tank on board so that the expenditure of energy threatens the patient, that you come up empty in the end and can't go on any further.  He noted that what they need to realize is that they are not powerboats but sailboats - that there is given the inexhaustible Breath of God and that the secret is not just to crank the motor but to lift the sail.

'I feel the winds of God today; today my sail I lift.'
